Family physician Dr. Wei-Shin Lai often had trouble falling back to sleep after late-night calls from patients. She tried listening to meditative music without waking up her husband, but found her headphones to be uncomfortable. That’s when she came up with the idea for SleepPhones® – comfortable, sleep-friendly headbands with built-in speakers. More than 12 years later, they’ve sold over 1 million units in more than 80 countries.
Many people have experienced the frustration of waking up in the middle of the night and struggling to fall back to sleep. For Dr. Lai and her husband, Jason Wolfe, this problem was the inspiration for a new product that could change the quality of sleep for customers.
In the beginning, Dr. Lai came home from work and sewed headbands at her kitchen table, while Jason soldered the speakers.
Today, SleepPhones employs more than 20 full-time staff members, supporting a global supply chain of components, plastics, and packaging.
How Google tools helps them grow
- Google Analytics
SleepPhones uses Google Analytics to determine where demand for their product is highest around the world and then work with distributors to meet that need. Dr. Lai and her team also use Google Analytics to gain insights about website visits and conversions.
- Google Translate
To help the business expand abroad, SleepPhones uses Google Translate to evaluate ads and marketing campaigns created by their international partners.
- Google Cloud
On the backend, Google Cloud helps SleepPhones deliver content quickly to people overseas. For example, the company is building an app that delivers musical content to help people sleep, and those audio files must be strategically placed on servers around the world. Google Cloud helps them do that more easily.
“If you’re trying to grow, you need to leverage the internet,” says Dr. Lai. “We love the control that Google gives us globally.”
