As you grow into new markets, you’ll need to gain insights about new users and maximize ad revenue. You’ll be challenged with managing many different ad networks to increase fill rates and improve earnings. This might mean relying on a combination of tools or development resources to build the right solution.
Easily manage many different networks in a single place using AdMob Mediation.
How to go about it
This guide gives you some insights that will help you get started with AdMob Mediation.
With the largest source of global advertiser demand, flexible ad controls, and an industry-leading mediation service, AdMob is the best platform to make money from apps and maximize your app revenue through advertising.
The basics of AdMob mediation
How AdMob Mediation works
When monetizing your app, you have the option to show ads from multiple ad networks to help maximize fill rates and increase earnings. AdMob Mediation provides a single place where you can manage many different networks easily. AdMob also supports SDK-less mediation, making it easier for you to add new ad networks without having to integrate additional SDKs or adapters. You can mediate lots of different types of ads, including rewarded, video, interstitials and banners.
Ad units are containers that you place in your apps to show ads to users. Ad units send ad requests to AdMob, then display the ads they receive to fill the request. When you create an ad unit, you assign it an ad format and ad type(s).
Ad format describes the way ads will look in your app and where they'll be located. Ad type describes the kinds of ads an ad unit can show to users.
There are several ad formats to choose from, and each ad format specialises in showing different ad types.
- Banner: A basic ad format that appears at the top and bottom of the device screen.
- Interstitial: Full-page ads appear at natural breaks and transitions, such as level completion.
- Rewarded video: Ads reward users for watching short videos.
Rewarded video ads
When you use AdMob’s rewarded mediation, you can easily monetize your apps with rewarded video ads from a number of ad networks. Here’s how.
How AdMob rewarded video ads work
AdMob rewarded video ad units allow you to reward users with in-app items for watching video ads.
Rewarded ads may be served only after a user explicitly chooses to view a rewarded ad. This puts the user in control of their in-app experience.
For example: a user playing a game has no more lives. The user is asked if they want to immediately recover lives by watching a video ad. Alternatively, the user can decide to spend money or wait a specific amount of time to reach the same result.
You can specify the reward values associated with the ad units in your app and set different rewards for different ad units. Users will receive the reward for viewing the video ad without needing to install anything.
Rewarded video ads format
AdMob rewarded ads are click-to-download video ads with an end card that appears when the video ends. They’re available only as interstitial ads.

Ad network optimisation
Ad network optimisation is a feature within AdMob Mediation that enables publishers to generate the highest CPM from the ad networks in their mediation stack. Ad network optimisation automates the mediation process and helps publishers maximise revenue with minimum effort.
Show the highest-paying ads
When you activate ad network optimisation, AdMob will dynamically check which ad network is paying the most and request an ad from that ad network to be served in your app. It does this by comparing the historical performance of your ad network CPMs with real time AdMob, Google Ads and DoubleClick Ad Exchange bids. Ad network optimisation supports AdColony, AMoAd, Domob, Flurry, InMobi, JumpTap, MdotM, Millennial, MobFox, and Vserv.mobi, with more ad networks added all the time.
Benefits of using ad network optimisation
- Free: ad network optimisation is free and easy to set up, with no SDK changes required.
- Maximize revenue: AdMob figures out the highest yielding ad network for each ad request and dynamically adjusts the order of the networks to serve ads to your app.
- Programmatic demand: enable Optimise AdMob Network to plug into realtime Google demand sources.
- Manage multiple ad networks: you can manage many ad networks from the AdMob UI.
- Saves time: frees up your time to focus on the growth of your app in new international markets.
Go SDK-less, save time
When you use SDK-less mediation, you can add new networks server-side without having to update your app. This is great if you’re concerned with SDK size or simply do not want to deal with the hassle of adding and updating new ad network SDKs. With SDK-less mediation, you can conveniently add new ad networks to your mediation stack.
AdMob brings together best-in-class technology in a single platform, so you can gain insights about your users and maximize your ad revenue. No longer will you have to rely on a combination of tools or use precious development resources to build your own solution – leaving you more time to focus on reaching customers in your new market.
